These little Blessing Bags are and have been ongoing donations from day one. We now are creating hundreds of them regularly and give them to every place we visit. Originally the idea was executed at the Youth Centre as an activity, making inspirational cards for those who needed some encouragement or some brightening to their day.
Mary's (Who runs the youth centre) card idea was a hit these little cards and bags continue to send Blessings everywhere we go. Rosie was awesome at sharing her card making skills with everyone too! Now Milly makes drawstring bags from donated fabric that we continually fill.
Every little blessing bag, includes a pad of paper, pen, purse size Kleenex, special snack or mints, sample size hand lotion, we personalize by adding perfume or woman or men's hygiene items, a small piece of jewelry or other little gift depending where they are going. Volunteers take them to the woman's shelters where they are perfect when women arrive as Kleenex is convenient being in such a difficult situation, paper and pen to take notes for important information. We also make our little bags for the local help centre; they go in all comfort packages and backpacks for the homeless.
HOUSE WARMING BASKETS
"This is a very special event to me, and would not have happened if it wasn't for Mackena Thibeault and Emily Mailhot who were so friendly at the dollar store a few years back and shared their idea with me while purchasing items for the baskets their group at school were working on.
Their story reminded me of Ashley coming home one day upset, from working at Park Haven a group home for teens. She said there was a girl who would be leaving soon even though Ashley didn't feel she was ready because the girl was turning 18 and would be too old for the home she would have to move out on her own.
It touched my heart to hear how these girls were trying to make the transition a little more comfortable for these Youth. We contacted Tammy from CKCS that year and found out how many more baskets were needed to supply every Youth turning 18 that year with a house warming basket. We were able to collect enough supplies and baskets for all of them and have done so every year since!
Our delivery this year marked the fifth year supplying Tammy from Chatham Kent Children's Services with enough house warming baskets to give to all her youth this year when they turn 18 and prepare for their new home.
We have currently expanded our Basket Program and now offer it to women staying in shelters who will transition into a new home with a fresh start. Moreover, included baskets for girls staying at the Inn of Windsor who is also transitioning into homes of their own."

We create Comfort Packages regularly! These care packages include pyjamas, slippers or cozy socks and a toiletry bag containing hygiene items and other necessities. We distribute these packages to the Woman's Center, Youth Group Homes and the Men's Homeless Shelters.
Comfort Packages are given when new guests are registered in these places, as they often show up with only the clothes they are wearing.
Ashley's Place also started a new program last year where we supply our local Women's Center with birthday gifts including cards to all women and children spending their birthday at the center.
BACK PACKS FOR THE HOMELESS
Back Packs for the Homeless is a mission we set out to achieve. Our goal has been to fill a minimum of 10 back-backs for the homeless each month. We distribute these with other donations to the homeless shelters during our monthly visits. As we have become friends with many guests at these shelters, we also decided not just to drop donations and leave. One of our monthly highlights is spending time with our new friends, socializing and playing games and being a bright spot in their day, as they are in ours!
We recognize that we have many families who don't get a chance to get out and do new fun things together. We believe the family unit is essential and so we offer summer activities to families in our community. Many will receive a fun trip at no charge, some at a discount and others will get a full prize! By using this approach, no one feels isolated or centred out, which is very important to us. (No one knows who received a free trip)
The Below pictures were taken on a bus trip to Green View Aviaries Zoo)
Ashley's Place also sponsors a youth for their year-end school field trips. We are so thankful to be able to provide these services to families in our community.
STUFFIES & FLASHLIGHT
We donated an on-going supply of stuffed animals, each with its flashlight attached. These gifts go to Chatham Kent Children's services, they are geared for young children taken from unsafe, dangerous situations and brought to safety. One of our amazing volunteers thought the flashlight was great for those children who are afraid of the dark.
BABY GIFT PACKAGES
Donations and baby gift packages are donated from Ashley's Place to The Refuge numerous times each month. These gifts going to the Refuge are providing women with a wide range of maternity & baby supplies for those who are in financial need or having a tough month. We help with diapers, clothing (newborn to 4T), baby food, blankets, toys, baby accessories and more!
YOUTH OF THE YEAR
"Ashley's Youth of the Year Award" recognizes a youth who has gone above and beyond with their kind heart and helpful gestures! Kevin Neudorf, was our Youth of the year for 2018!
FREE HOLIDAY DINNERS
Keeping with the theme of family and community we also offer free Holiday Dinners at Ashley's Place! We share a delicious meal, give gifts and door prizes for all!! This is a memorable time for our guests and us.
ANNUAL Day OF CHRISTMAS BLESSINGS
Our most unique and one of a kind event is our Annual Day of Christmas Blessings at our local homeless shelters. This is a special day of pampering those who don't usually get to indulge themselves. Activities we include during these special days are hand washing, massage, nail clipping, nail painting and hair cuts. We provide free backpacks that our guests fill with all of their Christmas gifts. We are thrilled that we can give these to over 100 people!
We fill tables with clothes, coats, boots, blankets, hats, mitts, warm winter socks, and new Christmas gifts that are all wrapped up. Everyone also can enjoy a Christmas craft table, and a spin the wheel win a prize every time game! And no Christmas party would be complete without a hot chocolate bar and baked goods!
MONTHLY VISITS TO SOLID ROCK YOUTH CENTER
Our volunteers from Ashley's Place enjoy visiting the Solid Rock Cafe Youth Center each month. Here we create, fund and organize events offering the youth something special to look forward to each month. Some fun activities include spa night, animal night, drug bullying and mental health awareness, colouring parties and more!
Our community garden will be up and running this spring. We are excited to have Annette and Dee bring this project to life. Our first seed planting party was enjoyed by many. Our gardeners are excited to watch their creations grow, care for them and turn them into a delicious meal.
